Crowns:

The crown of a tooth is all the portion of the tooth that is above the gum line.

When a tooth is either broken, chipped, or destroyed by decay, your tooth may need a crown.  A Crown covers your damaged tooth like a thimble would cover your thumb.  Its goal is to protect the remaining tooth structure and allow the damaged tooth to be restored to its proper shape and function.  A Crown may be made of porcelain, metal or a combination of these materials.
